Warden McDonald Saves Little Sebago Loon  News Story
Monday, February 19, 2007

Warden John MacDonald was the hero on Little Sebago recently when he rescued one of our loons who just could not bear to leave our lake. It was January 21 and just a small patch of open water was still visible from Mt. Hunger Shores Rd. In the middle of the patch was a loon swimming back and forth. There was not nearly enough water for the long take off that loons need. As the water patch got smaller and smaller the loon then perched on the edge of the ice. Over head, our beautiful Little Sebago eagle could be seen, knowing that there was a potential opportunity for him to have food. Neighbors on the shoreline spotted the loon and called IFW. John quickly responded but as he got closer to the loon with neighbor Neal Doucette and Steve Ellis, the ice measured only a half inch in depth. It was far too dangerous to go any further. With saddened hearts all went back to the shoreline. John said that if the loon somehow got to the other side of the lake he might attempt another rescue. The loon must have gotten the message because later that same day, John was able to rescue it. Priscilla Cutts, another Mt. Hunger resident, called John when the loon had reached the other side. Since there was no one in sight to make sure John would be alright if he happened to fall through the ice, he asked Priscilla if she would watch him while he was attempting to capture the loon. Via cell phone, they kept in touch until John and the loon were safely on shore. He then transported it to the Presumpscot River where it was released and seen diving, none the worse for wear for the adventure. Our thanks to John for a job well done and for saving one of our Little Sebago loon family. Thanks also the the Mt. Hunger Shore gang for their efforts. Hope that loon knows how much we care for him or her and that next year remembers when to leave our lake.
